Cantilever Rack

Skanska Civil

Problem

Skanska needed a plan to store heavy equipment in their Maspeth yard, which was very limited in space, and the only way to solve the problem was to go vertical. The area selected for equipment storage had a 5’ slope over 170’, so it would be difficult to pick and replenish material with a standard lift truck because of the slope.

Solution

They contacted Highlander Equipment and Specialized Storage Systems to come up with a plan to store the equipment. Our solution was to implement very narrow aisle high-bay storage 30’ high with multiple beam levels with wire decks to efficiently store the material. After Skanska installed concrete grade beams to hold the weight loads, each arm designed to hold 6,000 lbs. was to be installed within a ½” of each other to accommodate the 5’ slope. We also installed sheet metal back panels to camouflage the storage from the street and guide rails to protect the lift truck and rack from damage.

Results

Maximum use of the vertical space with minimal yard space to store every type of equipment of differing sizes and weights despite a 5’ slope. Our infinitely adjustable arms enabled the Combi-Lift equipment to efficiently work in only a 10’ wide aisle.
